Gum Disease Treatment Hertfordshire

Our dental hygienists and dentists play an important role in caring for your oral hygiene. Good hygiene habits and regular check-ups keep your teeth healthy and minimise your chances of gum disease.

Got red, inflamed, or bleeding gums?

Maybe you’ve got bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth that you can’t get rid of, despite brushing and flossing regularly?

It could be gum disease.

Periodontal disease, or gum disease as it’s more commonly known, affects over 45% of adults across the UK – but here at Hertford Dental Care, we provide a range of gum disease treatments to help our patients achieve the happiest, healthiest versions of their smiles.

What are the main signs and symptoms of periodontal disease?

Untreated gum disease can cause a myriad of health issues, and there are many red flags that you should stay on the lookout for.

Some of the main signs and symptoms of gum disease include:

  • Puffy or swollen gums
  • Bright red, dark red, or purple-coloured gums
  • Tender gums
  • Spitting blood when you brush or floss your teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Painful chewing
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth or loss of teeth

If you notice any of the above changes, or something else doesn’t seem quite right, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible so they can assess your teeth and gums and provide suitable treatment.

How do dentists diagnose and treat gum disease?

There are a few different things your dentist may do to diagnose gum disease – from measuring the depth of your gum pockets and taking dental X-rays to simply examining your mouth and reviewing your medical history.

Based on the severity of your periodontal disease, the complexity of treatment needed, and your personal risk factors, your dentist may assign a stage or grade to your gum disease to devise the most suitable treatment plan.

For those with mild gum disease (gingivitis), dentists may recommend scaling or root planing treatments to remove stubborn plaque and tartar, and provide oral hygiene tips to prevent gum disease from developing again in the future.

However, those with more advanced gum disease may require much more invasive surgical treatments to restore their oral hygiene. For example, flap surgery, a cosmetic gum graft to correct gum shrinkage or an uneven gum line, or bone grafting may be required to get their oral hygiene back on track and solve the cosmetic issues gum disease leaves in its wake.
